The Venue is a cabaret exploring poker machine addiction in contemporary Australian society.
Brought into the garish nether-world of The venue, the audience are witness to a battle of wills between individuals and their addiction. The performance follows the journey of Larry, Teresa, Wendy and Jess, to its most tragic end, over a single day inside the venue.
The master of the venue is The Machine – a vaudevillian villain who embodies the temptations and deception of gambling. He is unwillingly assisted in his treachery by the staff of the venue – whose group performance takes inspiration from the Ancient Greek chorus.
Two performance opportunities have been identified for late 2018: BOAA in September, and Ballarat Cabaret Festival in October.
A launch of the project, incorporating funding announcements and a script reading, will take place in Summer 2017/18.
