Report from recent industry events by Artistic Director Megan Riedl.
Last Wednesday I attended Showcase Victoria, thanks to the support of the Go Pitch Regional Support Fund. In a “speed dating” session, I met representatives from a range of Victorian performing arts centres and discussed our model and our members’ projects that are or will be suitable for touring, in particular highlighting Travels with My Black Dog. Exchanges of business cards was had with lovely people from Creative Victoria, Australian Cultural Fund and Arts Access Victoria. I was able to view two rounds of producers’ pitches and excerpts – with a keen eye for what worked well to sell a show to a crowd of venue programmers. I also had a long chat with Regional Arts Victoria‘s Connecting Places Manager Rosie Dwyer -who is keen to talk more with Tripwire about the expansion of their programs to support regional presenters and producers. And of course, I had a cuppa with super-supportive RAV Central Highlands Creative Facilitator Malcolm Sanders, who assured me Tripwire would kill it at Showcase 2019. I hope we do.
Last week I also attended Creative Victoria’s Touring Forum, held in Ballarat, giving our perspective on the current touring system and opportunities to change the way touring works in Victoria. Particularly of interest was the discussion around the lack of funding and support for touring regional works into metro Melbourne and the opportunities for inter-regional touring.
